First off, I need to say I have been on 15 cruises to date and this is the first time I felt moved to review a cruise. More specifically, an excursion. This was a 7 night cruise out of San Juan. Stops were St Thomas, St Maarten, St Croix, Dominica, and Barbados. The cruise itself was wonderful. We had a balcony room on deck 11. There is a row of balcony rooms on this ship that run along side of the spa down a private hallway. It was great. It was always quiet down this stretch of rooms and we were right there by the solarium, pool deck and windjammer. Service was excellent and the food was great although the menu itself in the main dining room could be updated. Seems like it is always the same menu. Windjammer was wonderful for breakfast and lunch but I advise to get there early before the crowds hit to get a table without wandering around hoping to find someone leaving. Also nice that this ship has an outside eating area for the windjammer. I have never seeen another ship with that option. The ports were also great. But one excursion got me quite upset and Royal will be hearing from me about this. On Dominica we did an excursion called Easy Dominica and Rainforest Drive. We were supposed to see some waterfalls, receive complimentary drinks and go to a nice lookout area for pics. The driver for this excursion was named Vincent. Do not do this excursion with him for sure! He had almost no knowledge of the island history, names of fruits or flowers we saw along the way, or anything else. He did get us to the waterfalls but there was nothing complimentary there. In fact, they were trying to sell us ponchos and it wasn't even raining. They also charged us an extra 8 dollars each to see the waterfalls and it was definitely a hike to get to them. Older people were not making the hike mostly uphill and the terrain was uneven. Then at the lookout point for pictures, Vincent was making people pay tips there and 20 dollars per person. We were on this excursion with a large group of 19 Puerto Ricans. Most didn't speak English. The leader of theri group collected tip money from them all and then Vincent sent him back to get more. They were not happy but they paid. My wife and I were also stuck. We were still a good distance from the ship and the last thing I wanted was to get us stranded in the middle of nowhere on Dominica. So I paid it. So here I am warning you all to not do this excursion if you see it offered. Really it is the first and only excursion booked through Royal that was all out terrible. I would book this cruise again in a second but I will never set foot on Dominica again. One other thing about the cruise itself. This ship is smaller and didn't have all the kids attractions that the bigger ships have so there was not many children on this cruise and we loved that! If you are looking for a quieter cruise, this ship can offer you that!
PROS: 1. We went to have a good time dancing. The music was great and so we had a fantastic time. 2. We'd rate all the crew as a 10 3. We liked the food and rate it as good. CONS: 1. RCCL administration we'd rate 3. If you've had to deal with "Shore Side" you are probably nodding your head in agreement. 2. The plumbing on the floor broke down, twice. On the last day the public toilets in the Schooner bar didn't work either. 3. If using the professional photographer, check his work. Luckily our waiter took pictures using our cell which were better since he took us head-to-toe rather knee level. 4. Check your bill: My bill had 2 invalid bar charges, when I got it fixed, they only fixed one so I had to start again. 5. My shareholder credit wasn't included in my bill. RCCL unavailable to me and the Courtesy Desk during the entire cruise. 6. My friend was charged $25 for a towel she returned. This was fixed but again wasted time in doing so. 7. Other friend was charged quadruple daily gratuities instead of for 2 in the cabin. Be aware: 1. Gym doesn't open until 10:30 am! 2. Can't get a smoothie until 2 pm when that bar opens In 70 cruises on 10 cruise lines I haven't been on a cruise I didn't absolutely love, this one included.
The staff went above and beyond requests that I made, and never said no to anything. I will cherish the way they made me feel forever and share my experience on this ship with everyone. Outstanding ship! My favorite on Royal Carribean so far! Entertainment, food, main dining, activities, shows and activities were all amazing! The hosts were fun, also the main dining staff went above and beyond. The staff attendant always handled all the requests and super friendly. The theme parties were so much fun and I enjoyed the theatre shows as well! I will cherish every moment I had on this ship and I recommend you go on Jewel of the Seas with your loved ones. It’s simply great! I can’t express it enough but my experience was 10/10 for everything. It’s their smaller ship but it definitely beats the other ships I’ve been on so far! Highly recommended!
Jewel was exceptional in 2022, I jumped on this cruise when I saw it. Ft. Lauderdale boarding was a breeze, crew was very welcoming. Food and service were as good as before. My cabin was spotless (I always sanitize my cabin myself) and in good condition. For peace of mind, I asked the steward for a sheet to cover the loveseat. I was concerned that the cabin wasn't very cool, but my steward had engineering adjust something in the hallway, and my a/c worked great thereafter. Jewel has a classic feel and spacious layout. Acres of glass, not walled-in like the large ships. What takes Jewel to the next level is the quality of the live musicians. The orchestra surely must be among the best at sea. Montero Duo, violin/guitar from Spain, best I have seen on any ship. The production City Of Dreams was solid with good vocals, energetic dancers, and elaborate sets. extremely over-amplified, painful at times. Besides the music, gazing at the ocean in peace with a cocktail and a book was the best stress-relief for me. It should be noted that the guest profile reflected the bargain fare. Many decent people, but frankly, some pure trash. Loud, profane, and inebriated. I am not sensitive to cigarette smoke, but if you are, Jewel may not be the ship for you. I may return soon, the music is that good, and the ship is so very comfortable.
