Just returned from Icon of the seas on July 18. Family reunion trip with 31 guests and 12 cabins, primarily Sky junior suite category, but also grand suite, infinite balcony, and owner's suite in the mix. The cabins were all great and worth the upgrade if affordable in your budget. Would avoid midship deck 9 due to loud noise from deck below and even from the pearl area multiple decks below because it's spans multiple decks. No issue at all with ship movement on deck 16 forward, which was initially a concern, and very quiet up there as well. Service was great and friendly, but one exception to an almost perfect trip was the spa. By far the pushiest high stress experience I have ever had on a ship. They have 50 spa workers and need to keep them busy so there is a horde of them out front "selling" and once you go for a treatment, the upsell pressure for products and other treatments is awful. Will likely never go on this ship again because of that. I did not eat in main dining room but those in our group who tried it said it was bad, which I did read on multiple message boards. No issue with finding pool chairs in any locations and Surfside lovely for small children. Casino is not a must for us, but for those who do spend time in the casino, the one on this ship was not great. Half or more of it was smoking which was bothersome as well. Overall it was an excellent experience and the only thing that would keep me from going back is the super disappointing spa, and the fact that the cruise line allows their vendor to operate like that, and may promote it to make more money.
We sailed Icon of the Seas - July 4-11. Booked: Sky Class Jr. Suite Royal UP: Scored with an Owner’s Suite (well worth it for me, my wife, and my daughter) Room: This was our first time on Icon - more on the experience later. For comparison, we had a Grand Suite on Freedom and a Junior Suite on Allure for previous sailings, and Icon’s Owner’s Suite is HUGE. I would not pay for this directly, and RoyalUp was a logical way to factor a discount into the cost-benefit rationale. We prefer to avoid being on top of each other and crammed into a small-ish room, and this room offered plenty of space and storage. The balcony was massive, and I tried to make the most of it. The bed and pullout were comfortable, and we took advantage of the pillow menu. The bathroom was a wonderful perk for us with a spacious shower and the dual sink. Bobby and I Gede as our stateroom attendants were absolutely fantastic. They greeted us warmly every time we saw them, and they helped celebrate my daughter’s 16th birthday with decorations on our door and a very nice gift for her. The stateroom was immaculately designed, and they ensured it was ready for us each morning and evening. Coastal K: The positive feedback on Reddit and other forums is echoed with a multiplier by 1,000. CK was awesome. Our waiter, Ramil, is absolutely stellar. He was very warm and friendly to us while providing the most exceptional service we have ever had on land or sea. He provided us with recommendations on the menu and ensured we took advantage of any menu selection limited to a single day. It was so hard to say goodbye, and we hope to see him on a future sailing. Special shout-out to Sheila, who also took care of us one morning for breakfast. The Coastal Kitchen management, Joseph and Jayesh, took great care of us and chatted with us periodically throughout our meals. They ensured Ramil was our waiter every day, and they made us feel extremely valued. The food in Coastal Kitchen was absolutely wonderful. The culinary highlights included the French Toast, Eggs Benedict, Braised Short Ribs, Lobster, Lobster Fritters, and so much more. To help celebrate my daughter’s birthday, they made a special breakfast treat and sang to her. We were spoiled in CK, and we miss the team there immensely, especially Ramil. He was so kind to us and happy. Concierge Team: I would like to highlight our Concierges Victor and Maria for their exceptionally hard work to keep us happy. They helped us with getting us new Wow Bands and programming them, helped us with our internet connectivity issues, and got us the show and dinner reservations we were interested in. Throughout the week we chatted from time to time, and they were friendly and nice. Maria helped us successfully resolve an issue with some of our pre-purchased items. They also escorted us off the ship for disembarkation, ensuring a calm and expedited process. Chops Grill: Wonderful meal as always. I generally go to Capital Grille or Del Frisco’s, and this is on par with them. I order the tomahawk, which was a decent size and tender. Our waiter, Jerin, was wonderful. Hooked: This was our first at Hooked, and it did not disappoint. We all ordered the lobster, and it was very good. Tanmoy, our waiter, was very attentive and friendly. Food overall: There are plenty of food offerings, and we did not try everything out on this trip, which is a good excuse to sail on Icon again. We did not eat in Playmakers or the Main Dining Room, but we did try Windjammer for lunch a couple of times, and it was good. My wife and daughter loved the Crepe station in the Aquadome Market. Shows & Entertainment: The entertainment on Icon is impressive, and there is plenty of variety. Our cruise director, Emma, is absolutely fabulous. During one of the dance events on the promenade, she was on stage dancing to Venga Boys and on the mic singing along with the energy of being a member of the group herself. Maybe she was a pop star in a previous life (I would not be surprised). The Wizard of Oz was excellent and impressive with the AV and use of aerial elements, but be aware of the runtime - 1:40. Aqua Action is IMPRESSIVE with the performances, music, and AV. Royal stepped up big time with this show. Elemental was also impressive. The musical performers around the ship were also noteworthy. I came across one of the piano players with the piano IN the elevator playing and singing. I cannot express how much this adds to the fun atmosphere on the ship. Fitness: The cruise director and team leveraged the promenade for group movement sessions, which I found to be a good idea. The leader was certainly working up a sweat and they had sizeable crowds. I did not see the aqua-based exercise sessions myself but I was happy they were offered. I am a person who works out a lot, and I was impressed with the gym. The equipment layout was well-thought-out and well-maintained. Small nitpick - no calf machine. The gym was a bit busy, and I think there should be someone from security or staff roaming from time to time to ensure the young ones (children/teens) and inexperienced people operate the equipment safely. PSA - the gym is no place for sandals (risky choice, especially around the free weights and barbells). Spa: My wife and daughter had spa treatments, and they enjoyed their experiences. The price for the Thermal Spa offered on embarkation day seemed steep to me sSure. o I did not take it. Bars & Starbucks: We did not purchase a drink package, and since we were in a suite, we drank what was offered during the day and mostly worked from the OBC. There were plenty of bars to choose from, and each of the bartender staff was friendly and attentive. I did find the pricing of Starbucks very reasonable. The price of my usual quad espresso was marginally higher compared to the price I pay at home, and they take the app (points for the win). Pools & The Grove: I did not try out the various pools and hot tubs on ICON since we had access to The Grove. My daughter and her friends hung out in the pools and whirlpools throughout the ship and had a good time (barely saw her during the day). I was impressed with the adult pool and the swim-up bars (wonderful additions by Royal). The Grove was an oasis for my wife and me. It was not busy or crowded, with plenty of seating options and a small pool to relax in while chatting with people. Marv, our bartender in The Grove, was exceptional and was extremely friendly. He remembered our drink orders each day; we had a wonderful time chatting about the World Cup games while he was working. Special shoutout to the exceptional team in The Grove - Lalu & Paul. The food options in the area were delicious, including the dessert (Ice Cream Bars). Casino: I spent time each evening in the casino, and the team was extremely friendly. I played Craps mostly and some Roulette. There are plenty of slots, but I did not win much at all, so I stuck to tables. At the craps table, we had a group of regular players and dealers on rotation. We all developed fun relationships and had our own “inside” jokes throughout the night, which made the experience a fun one. Standouts were dealers Sheila, Alex, Grey, and Adrian. I do like the non-smoking section of the casino and applaud it. Ports: Costa Maya: We walked around the port and did a little shopping. Based on feedback and recommendations online, I pretty much designated this stop as one to stay close to the ship and chill. The extra time on the ship was spent in The Grove while my daughter hung out with her newfound friends from the teen club. Roatan: My daughter and I did diving with Coconut Divers during this stop, and we got back with enough time to grab lunch in the port and shop. The dives were glorious, and the operation was top-notch. They arranged for a driver to meet us and drop us back to the port. My wife enjoyed the spa in the morning and then we walked around the port. A special note about this port - if you are on the ‘right’ side of the ship as it docks, there is a performance by the locals to greet the ship’s passengers, and they stay throughout the day. Cozumel: We took a cab to Paradise Beach and had a wonderful day there. Food was great and the service was really good. Perfect Day at Coco Cay: First time going and it was impressive. We did the waterpark mainly. There were sizeable waits for the popular slides, but it was a fun day. My wife and daughter did the zipline as well, which they enjoyed. We got lunch at the buffet. Logistics: We flew in the day prior and stayed in the Ft. Lauderdale area before heading to the Miami Port. I rented a one-way rental from Avis with the return at the port. This allowed us to roam for a day, and the price was less than Ubers and shuttles. The shuttle from Avis to the Royal Terminal was quick and effortless. There was a not-so-nice larger family who cut in front of us in the line for a shuttle, but our patience paid off with a shuttle for ourselves, which left a few minutes later. After we were off the ship, we had a reservation with ‘Shuttle Port Miami’. Dispatch and our driver were in close communication, and the driver met us promptly after we retrieved our bags. The vehicle was clean, and the drive back to the Ft. Lauderdale airport was smooth. Will use them again. Overall impression: The Icon of the Seas is a wonderful ship. There is so much to do and experience. I am looking forward to sailing on her again really soon.
Cabin bump out balcony. The room was perfect, storage bathroom wow the storage but the sleeping arrangement. We booked this cabin because it sleeps, which it technically does. So we the parents had a comfortable queen. My 15yr old son and 12yr old daughter shared a couch that folded flat to create a full size. I thought maybe a trundle. They survived but my boy slept more comfortably, his word, on the balcony chair. Royal Caribbean why, this sucked and made are cruise stressful. A Pullman bed or do something creative with furniture to create a bunk. The ship was huge but easy to get around. It was crowded but not much different from any other ship. The hideaway pool area is like crytonite to kids they enforced the rule,,,,they enforced the rule…. Saw it on multiple occasions. We wanted more game shows but they had them. You need to watch your phone!!! RC give an option to receive a paper for activities and info. Sorry old school. Would we go back YES! Oh casino make sure you treat the paper vouchers as cash. You lose it, get it wet, the money is gone. Don’t do something illegal they will catch you but destroy, misplace that paper suddenly no video no tracking etc can be found! Over all awesome
