Boarding Sapphire Princess in CPH Arranged for pick up at hotel at 10:30 for our 11:00-11:30 check in time Taxi driver dropped us off. However could not leave his cab. I had to get a Porter to come over and collect our bags since we are both handicapped. We headed toward the terminal for check-in and was told we could not go in. We needed to go to terminal 1 as they were late getting security set up and it would be a couple of hours. We refused to go to terminal 1 because we had a low charge on our scooters. and were allowed to wait at terminal 2 until they opened. Took a couple of hours. It was the worst embarkation ever. No communication. Got checked in and lead to exit door to right. After line was not moving, had us to go to the oher side of the terminal where we waited in another line in the rain to go through passport control. It was more of a problem with new procedure instituted at the port and computer issues, not Princess related, but communication could have been better. Sapphire Princess Love the size with 1000 less pax than the Regal Easy to maneuver around Lots of accessible bathrooms Chair hogs moved indoors to the Piazza during cooler weather. Loved the Piazza otherwise No noise bleed to other venues such as Sabatinis and Crown Grill Love Vines, Good Spirits. International Cafe Hate location of International Restaurant for afternoon tea. Only way to access is rear elevator down from deck 7 Getting on and off the ship with scooters has been very difficult and challenging. The ramp has a lip at the top that is difficult to get over and then drops. Can't access the launderette either the way the doors swing and the lips at the thresholds. Dodging housekeeping carts along the way. Will send laudry out in the future. Haven't found any automatic doors to the promenade deck. Liked the enclosed and covered Calypso pool area. We try to avoid buffets, but they seem to be well laid out, but congested to use with scooters. Staff again were very helpful. Stateroom Spacious No automatic doors No drawers for clothes, just open shelves Ramp to bathroom and balcony is tricky Great location, mid forward directly by elevators. Bed is great and very comfortable. Liked having top sheets Temperature inside has been warm at times even when turned to lowest setting. Has USB outlets on lamps bedside. Plenty of outlets at desk. None at nightstands. Glad I brought battery backup for cpap to plug in to avoid extension cord trip hazard. Unable to use balcony much due to cold weather. Shallow depth, but wide because of accessible stateroom. No dining table. Small table and ottomans. Staff and Crew Exceptional service Edward in good Spirits Nanni in Crown Grill Ching in Sabatinis Sophie in Vines Everyone has been so attentive and accommodating Exception is the front desk was not very sensitive to our needs to get our walkers off the ship on disembarkation day. Answer was pretty much, maybe your steward can help. Put them out the night before and hope you can make it to the bathroom without them. Hope you don't fall and sue us. Food Churascaria grill sucks. Took away good steaks and beef and left it with cheap cuts of meats that were very tough and had no flavor. Would never go back. Crown grill has good filets and lobster tail. Lamb chops are good. Crab cakes .sometimes. Potatoes sucked. Come out cold. A little inconsistent on what comes out, sauces, salt, etc. Seems to be a communication issue between orders. Sabatinis has been excellent and more consistent. Ching has been exceptional. Branzino was very good Horizon Court and Grill have been disappointing. Food cold for the most part. International Cafe has been very good. Alfredo’s was just OK Ports Copenhagen. Spent a couple of days pre-cruise. Lovely lunch in Nyhavn. Visited Amalieborg and saw changing of the guards. Saw the Opera house, city hall, and the shopping street. Lerwick, Scotland (tender port). Very cold and rainy. The coldest winter day i ever spent was the summer day in Lerwick. Rode the scooter around town. Peeked in some of the shops and back to the ship. Stornoway Scotland. Still cold. Took shuttle bus into town from the port. Wandered some of the shops. Bought a couple Harris Tweed caps. Saw a street preacher sharing the gospel. Then back to the ship. Belfast, Northern Ireland. Paid for the shuttle into town. dropped off at city hall. Took the HOHO bus to see the sights. Went to St Georges Market. Very livley. Lost my wife a couple of times around the shopping stalls. Wanted to do the Titanic Museum, but short on time and you have to have advance tickets. Liverpool, England Evreything was right there by the terminal. Hung out with the Beatles. Saw the Ferry cross the Mersey. Albert Docks. Lots of new mixed with the old. Cobh Ireland. Passed on kissing the Blarney Stone. Took the train over to Cork. Very convernient, right next to the cruise terminal. Had lunch at a pub. Couln't believe a pub not having fish and chips. Headed to the English Market. Amazing displays of meats, produce, and other delecasies. Lots of shops, but also some rain. Back to the ship on the train. Local Grandparents with their grandchildren who love to ride the trains. 5 sea days Sydney Nova Scotia (not Australia) that woukd have been quite the deviation. Ha! Saw the giant fiddle, cruised the boardwalk, beautiful sunny day. Had lunch (finally fish and chips) before reboarding the ship. Halifax, Nova Scotia. Again, a beautiful sunny day. we just strolled the waterfront. Went to the Maritime Museum which was awesome. Zuiderdam was in port with us, but not to crowded. Then our last sea day befor Boston. Boston Disembarkation Did facial recognition and it went very smoothly and efficiently. Locating luggage in the terminal was a nightmare. None of it was where it was supposed to be. Blue 23 was mixed in with a bunch of other numbers. I enlisted a porter to help for the search. Took awhile but finally found them. However walkers never made it off the ship and it took a long time to track them down. Then finding the port agent to handover our Ship &Play bag to, became difficult All in all, a wonderful cruise with many fond memories.
Overall, I really enjoyed this cruise. I was solo on it, so my experiences may differ from those who sailed as a couple or with family. First of all, let me get this out the way. Embarkation was a nightmare not of Princess' making. The internet went down for the government agents at the port, which delayed boarding. It was slow, it was tedious, and many passengers were feeling entitled. However, in the end, everyone got aboard on time. I booked a balcony guaranteed and I was quite pleased with it. I was on Aloha deck. My cabin steward was Benjamin and he was absolutely outstanding. He put my bags in my room and greeted me every morning as I left my cabin. Quite easily one of the best stewards I've had. Period. As for the cabin itself, it was fine. Good size, especially just for one person. It's ideal for two though. It was also very quiet, which was key for me. Though I was mere steps away from the elevator and stairs to the Lido deck. I did take in some of the shows, but most were just fair. I loved Freddie's Queen though. The worst though was the "magician", Jack Rhodes, who was awful. People walked out, including me. The activities staff were great. Huge shout out to both Mau and Charlotte. And an even bigger shout out to cruise director Alwyn. They made all the trivia and game shows incredibly fun and lively. Now as for the service... It was not always good. My main dining room was Vivaldi. Service there was generally very good, though there were times that the time between appetizer and main course reach nearly an hour. I also not too happy with the menu on some nights, so I avoided it and opted to go to the buffet. Though small, it was quite good. For breakfast, you either went to the buffet or the International dining room. I do not know how lunch and dinner service was there, but for breakfast it was horrid. Very slow, very unorganized, many people having to ask multiple times for missing food items (juice, coffee, etc.). While not my worst dining experience on a cruise ship, it's my second worse. I did partake in the specialty dining since I got Princess Premier. Crown Grill was incredible. Great service and excellent food. By far my best experience in any restaurant. Sabatini’s, Churrascaria, and Alfredo's were all bad. Service was decent in all, but the food was just bad. With Sabatini's, my pasta was undercooked and my dessert was stale. Not even Olive Garden was that bad. The other two, the food was just below average. I did not go to Makoto Ocean, but I heard many people rave about it. The other food options were all good to very good. The pizza at Prego Pizzeria was definitely better than what Alfredo's served. My only minor complaint is they need to be aware of possible food allergies and keep the seafood topped pizzas separate. This was a transatlantic cruise starting in Copenhagen and ending in Boston, with port stops at the following: Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland Stornoway, Isle Of Lewis, Hebrides Belfast, Northern Ireland Liverpool, England Cobh (Cork), Ireland Sydney, Nova Scotia Halifax, Nova Scotia There were also 5 straight sea days. My favorite port was Liverpool, since I'm a huge Beatles fan. I also love Cobh and Belfast. My stay in Copenhagen was quite brief (just stayed for 1 night), but I'd love to visit it again. Now as for the excursions, I booked all through Princess, except in Liverpool. Two of them were cancelled due to "lack of people". I found that to be odd since they both showed as sold out at one point in time. The two that were cancelled were "A Walk Through Historic Belfast" and "Foodies On Foot" (in Halifax). I did not rebook a new excursion for either port. I instead opted to do the Hop On/Hop Off bus in Belfast. I suggest not buying on board, but directly with the bus operator. It's cheaper. In Halifax, I just walked around on my own. The excursions I did do were: Southernmost Shetland - Sumburgh Head Harris Whisky Distillery & Tweed Shop (Stornoway) Local Connections: Cork Harbour Sea Safari Sydney Old Town Walking Tour & Celtic Experience I nearly all of them, especially the ones in Stornoway and Cork. The walking tour in Sydney isn't worth it. Boring and we didn't even walk all that far from the ship. It's something you could do on your own. Disembarkation was a breeze, though it was a bit chaotic in collecting luggage and in finding the proper transportation to the airport. (I booked through Princess.) Overall, I truly enjoyed the cruise despite some bad service in the bars and restaurants. I would still it recommend it though. The ship is now among one of my favorites and I would sail on her again in a heartbeat.
Sapphire Princess is a smaller Princess, with just 2670 passengers. While it entered service 22 years ago, it shows its' age well, due in part to a 2025 refurbishment and a crew which is continually working to keep it shipshape. We found the crew to be particularly hospitable, cheerful and friendly. The Captain spent time on day 1 to welcome the passengers and took considerable effort to keep us informed about the details of a subsequent schedule/port change and the need for an at-sea medivac of an ill passenger. We found the entertainment to be a little light, with only one production show offered, that being 'Bravo,' early in the cruise. However, with only two 'sea-days,' the excursion opportunities were many and generally left us quite tired at night. There were some good music and comedy offerings in various lounges throughout the ship. We dined in a dinning room the first night and found the experience to be pleasant. However, a scheduling snafu caused us to try the buffet the second night and we continued to dine there for the remainder of the cruise as it was the best 'buffet experience' that we have encountered in over twenty cruises. The buffet had different daily specials and a great variety of high-quality foods seldom found in a shipboard buffet. Foods were always at the proper temperature in addition to being served with a smile. In addition, a high-level roamed the buffet floor, seeking comments from passengers. After day 1, we enjoyed the offerings from the buffet for every subsequent meal. The combination of a very friendly crew, outstanding food and great ports (Scandinavian and Baltic) made this a momentous cruise on an excellent vessel.
