Exquisitely Refurbished
We've revamped everything from the carpets to the chandeliers and created brand new places and spaces in our most extensive ship renovation yet. Unwind in luxury and enjoy the breathtaking views from your spacious balcony in the new, exquisitely finished Haven Deluxe Owner's Suites. The brand-new Pit Stop, a 1950's American bar, takes you back to the era when classic cars sported chrome finishes. To preface this review: I specifically booked this cruise because of the cost of the cruise and location close to home. Me and my wife live in Northern NJ and the idea of leaving from Philadelphia allowed us to drive morning of. In addition, had a nice $1000 off casino offer which made this cruise about $2200 all in for an interior room. After we got done upgrading to a club balcony with free at sea plus, the total cost came to about $3000 for all in experience for both of us combined. ($1500 pp) With that in mind, the NCL Jewel was a great small ship cruise. Recently, we have sailed on NCL Breakaway and MSC World Europa for our last 2 cruises and getting back to a smaller ship was a nice change of pace. The layout was easy to understand and the convenience of centrally located things was great. Highlights for us include: - Specialty Dining. With NCL you get 3 nights specialty dining included, and with Free at Sea Plus extra nights were 50% off making them very reasonable. We ended up doing 5 nights of specialty dining. In order, we did Le Bistro, Cagneys, Moderno, Teppanyaki, and La Cucina. All were very good and a marked improvement from our 2 2024 NCL cruises on Joy and Getaway. - Bar City. The centrally located "Bar City" on Deck 6 midship was great. All 3 bars connect there (Magnums Wine & Champagne, Shakers Martini Bar, and Whiskey and Beer Bar) which allows for customers to order any drink they want. All the bartenders were great and we found ourselves there nightly. - Spinnaker Lounge. On newer NCL ships this has been rebranded as the Observation Lounge but on Jewel it was still Spinnaker. Most of the late night parties and daily activities were held here as was the World Cup Semifinal and Quarterfinal games. Great staff and gorgeous space. - Bermuda. Our happy spot. It was our 3rd time in the last 3 years getting back to Bermuda. Perfect 85 degree and sunny weather as well as warm water at the beaches. Super safe. Some downsides: - Switch from Charleston to Nova Scotia. This was totally out of NCL's hands, I get it, but the last minute switch from a day in Charleston, SC to a morning only in Nova Scotia really disappointed us and many aboard. One of the reasons we chose this itinerary was because of Charleston and to have that port close 2 weeks before our arrival stunk. Nova Scotia was fine, but we were only there from 7 AM to 12 PM. Nothing was open to explore yet and bars and restaurants along water were all closed until 11 AM. To make matters worse, sailing that far North drastically changed the weather for the remaining 3 days on board after Bermuda. Temp dropped to 60's or low 70's, wind picked up to a steady 30-40 mph, and ocean swells went from 3 ft to 8-10 ft. - Pool deck. The pool deck was great and "classic cruise" vibes. In line with the above, once the wind and weather changed, so did the pool deck. Each of the last 3 days, all loungers on top deck of pool deck were closed due to wind. Not enough seats for hundreds and hundreds of people who were coming outside. Not enough to do inside to fill a day. - Entertainment. This is the one area I believe the Jewel struggled as an older, smaller ship. The entertainment itself was fine. The singers/bands around the boat were talented. The singers and dancers in the main theatre were good. The comedian was okay at best. But there just was not enough. The comedian did 2 full nights of the same show (4 total performances, all the same). The singers and dancers did 2 singing and dancing routines. There was a night where the variou singers all performed, just in the theatre. And the welcome aboard show. That was it. Coming off the MSC World Europa which had 2 or 3 different main shows each night was a stark difference. Newer NCL boats have Syd Norman's which I think is some of the best entertainment on any cruise line, but without it to bring people in 3 nights during the week, the rest was just blah. - Taxes/Gratuities/Service Charge/Service. I wasn't 100% sure what to call this and I also don't want to make this a complaint. Our service was overall exceptional from dining halls, to bars, to pool deck, to port help. I also have no way to quantify this either, but NCL is doing something weird with these pre paid gratuities and service charges. With the new free at sea package, for a 7 day cruise, we were charged $399 for the drink package gratuities (200 pp, or $29 per day, pp). This is a new spike in that price. We were also charged $120 for the specialty dining upgrade gratuities (60 pp, or $20 per meal) which is a new spike in that price. I am not sure I would be tipping almost 33% on the meals at specialty dining onboard. For a standard tip of 20% that would assume a $200 meal and it just is not that. Additionally, I am not sure if me and my wife would be tipping $60 per day at the various bars. At a standard 15% drink tip, that assumes a $400 bar tab per day, and again, we just did not spend that much. My question is, where are those $520 in tips going? In addition, we also get charged $20 per person per day for the room service charge that you can prepay. That amounts to another $280 over the course of the cruise. In theory, this is $700 that me and my wife paid, in addition to our cruise fare, in what amounts to PREPAID tips before ever stepping foot on the boat. $100 per day in tips. Just seems like a lot to me, especially since that means 1000 other rooms are doing the same thing and NCL is clearing $700,000 per week in tips and gratuities on just the Jewel alone... At the same time the cruise standard was always 2x per day room cleaning (room make up and turn down service) and now it is down to 1x per day without even that occasionally. (Had to call for towels 2x on this cruise, not the room steward fault either as he easily had 25 rooms to clean). Also noticed less overall bartenders, less drink runners in large lounges or by the pool, and less staff in buffet areas. I feel like pre Covid cruises I would barely get 3 steps in before someone asked if I needed anything. Now most of the staff are repurposed to asking if I want to buy anything, and I am also pre paying $700 a week in tips that I never paid before. Just an observation...
